In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I'm writing my blog in GREEN (I hope it doesn't clash too badly with the reds and pinks, LOL!)

Here are a few fun tidbits about the Irish, St. Paddy's Day, and/or the color green in association with Irish Americans.

Jonathan Swift: 1667-1745

Jonathan Swift, 18th Century Irish Satirist, made a darkly funny persuasive argument in his satirical essay, "Modest Proposal For Preventing The Children of Poor People in Ireland From Being Aburden to Their Parents or Country, and For Making Them Beneficial to The Public". His argument: Eat the children!

GANGS OF NEW YORK, 2002
In a related piece of Irish History, specifically Irish American History, for many years prior to 1845, the Irish that immigrated to the United States were mostly of the Protestant middle class. But with the onslaught of the Irish Potato Famine that year, came an influx of lower class and poor Catholic Irish (who just so happened to celebrate, BIG, St. Patrick's Day). They were hated, taunted, and vilified for their "strange" ways and robust drinking habits.

The American Irish soon began to realize that in numbers, there is POWER, and they began to organize and mobilize. In fact, their voting block, The Green Machine, was soon an important "swing vote" to politicians, who learned quickly to "schmooze" this same group that they'd once denounced.

Well, hope you found this fun and enlightening!

The contest ends at midnight so be sure to enter and try and win!!! Be sure to follow the links to the other 120 authors. They are also giving away things and with each entry on their site, you are entered one more time for the two grand prizes!!! Good luck and Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

DIAMONDS AND TOADS is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Micro-mini Blurb:
A sizzling, comic fairytale of two sisters, two hunks, and fairy magic. “Good” Delilah is blessed with wealth and the man she’s loved for ages, except he’s more interested in her newfound millions, while “bad” Isadora, is cursed with blurting obscene quips, just when the man she dumped years before swaggers back into her life.

Excerpt (This is from Part Two, the "Bad" sister, Isadora's story):

“I’ve always expected more of you than I have of your silly half sister.” Her mother slid her hand from Isadora’s arm and took a sip of her wine. “It is you who have the beauty and the brains to get us reinstated in the social register,”—Isadora clenched her fists in her lap, but forced the muscles in her face to remain relaxed—“something that I am not convinced Delilah is going to be able to doeven with the money and the catch she’s made in Chas.”

Isadora felt the heat of anger, of frustration, and of her own disappointment in herself rise up inside her like molten lava. She swiveled around and looked at the band. The first chords of “I’ve Got a Crush on You” filled the air.

A second later, a warm hand fell on her shoulder. She started.

“They’re playing our song—shall we dance?” The familiar smooth-as-KahlĂșa voice sent an unwanted thrill through her.

I only dance with men with 9-figures. “I only dance with men with 9-inchers.”

“Isadora!” her mother said.

A very masculine chuckle followed.

Mouth. Shut!

“Well, you’re in luck then.” He took hold of her hand and lifted her from her seat. She finally looked at him. Sam. Samuel Thomas Slade. The devil incarnate. Still gorgeous as ever. And by the dark tan of his skin and the sun streaks in his chestnut hair, clearly still a slacker scuba dude as well. What a waste.

All right, now for your chance to win!

Today, I'm giving away a $25 Amazon or B&N Gift Card.

To be entered into my giveaway today, as well as the giveaway for the two GRAND PRIZES, simply share something you like about St. Paddy's by leaving a comment, ALONG WITH YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. The winner of my giveaway, as well as the winners of the two grand prizes will be chosen via random.org.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Being part Irish I hate the taste of beer but give me a good whiskey and I'll drink it.

  32. We don't celebrate St. Patric Day in my country, so I don't have any memories to share. When I see the TV relations from other countries there are many drinking and singing people wearing funny hats. I think for most it's just an excuse to get drunk. However I like the other symbol of Ireland - clover.
A four-leaf clover brings luck. I loved looking for them as a child.
